Genesis 4 - 6, Matthew 2

The journey to read through the bible in one year. One thought and one verse from every book and chapter of the bible…

Genesis 4
Genesis 4:7 "If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must rule over it.”

This morning I find myself reflecting on what it means to rule over my sin. This verse seems so straight forward. Just do what is right. The formula is simple....but so tough to put into practice. I know that because I am human that I am going to fall short and sin in so many different areas and in so many different ways. But I can never use that as an excuse. Just like a king rules over his country, I have to have the same mindset when it comes to sin. It is something that I cant let control, dictate, and shape the choices and decisions that I make. And while I know that I CAN never and WILL never be perfect on this earth, I have to do everything in my power and control to make sure that it doesnt control me...

GENESIS 5
Genesis 5:24 Enoch walked faithfully with God; then he was no more, because God took him away.

How amazing to read this verse. I know nothing about Enoch, or his life other then what is recorded in the Genesis (which isnt much...father, had both sons and daughters...and lived 365 years). But what is recorded about him is that he walked faithfully with God. What an amazing legacy to leave. The only thing we know...and it was that he was faithful. When I die, I would love nothing more then for the only thing that people knew about me, was that I walked faithfully with God. Lord, help me today to be faithful in ALL things to you...

GENESIS 6
Genesis 6:11-12 Now the earth was corrupt in God’s sight and was full of violence. 12 God saw how corrupt the earth had become, for all the people on earth had corrupted their ways...

I look at our world and wonder how much lower we can really go. It always seems that we are way more evil, wicked, self-centered, and violent then at any point in history. Like all of us, I was appalled, shocked, and outraged by the recent shooting in Newtown. As a parent I felt the grief, loss, and agony of that community. And so I read this verse...and to be honest almost find solace in the fact that man has always sucked. It took just 6 chapters in the Bible for God to look at the world that He had created and see how horrible people in it were acting. How corrupt, immoral, and evil it was. Are we more evil, violent, corrupt, and immoral then at any point in history? I dont know...but I DO know that even in the very beginning, we were only filled with thoughts of ourselves. And it is a comfort for me to know that God is God... regardless of how evil, corrupt, immoral  and violent that this earth always has been...

MATTHEW 2
Matthew 2:12 And having been warned in a dream not to go back to Herod, they returned to their country by another route.

I wonder how scared or what the emotions and thoughts the wisemen had when they decided to defy the king and go back a different way. I wish that I could have heard them talk about what they were going to do and the potential consequences that they faced. I love how so often, God takes us down different paths and  has us experience things that we would never dream of or even think about doing on our own. His paths and ways arent ours. Today I trust in that...
