Old Testament...Avoiding temptations at all costs...

The journey to read through the bible in one year. One thought and one verse from every book and chapter of the bible…

GENESIS 37
Genesis 37:29-30 29 When Reuben returned to the cistern and saw that Joseph was not there, he tore his clothes. 30 He went back to his brothers and said, “The boy isn’t there! Where can I turn now?”

Reuben intended to do the right thing, and even talked his brothers initially out of just out right killing Joseph, but still didnt have it in him to keep them from harming Joseph all-together. When we sit and do nothing...intending to help, or justifying in our minds that we will when it puts us in less danger, people can and often times do get hurt. We need to be people of action.

GENESIS 38
Genesis 38:7 But Er, Judah’s firstborn, was wicked in the Lord’s sight; so the Lord put him to death.

This is a crazy tale. The story of Judah and Tamar. You have everything from prostitution, to almost murders, and everything in between. I love the honesty of the Bible. There are some really hard things to read. They are downright disgusting. But I love how God is willing to show us not only the good, but also the reality of evil...

I chose this verse because of how important it is that we train our children well. It seems that Judah wasnt the greatest dude of all time, and two of his three children were so wicked that God literally put them death. I dont know how bad you have to be for that to happen...but my guess is that it isnt good. Our children need to be our priority in making sure that we raise them well. As a pastor, I am constantly challenged by the thought of making an impact upon hundreds, if not thousands of teenagers, and losing out on my son because my ministry was too important. I never want that to be true...

GENESIS 39
Genesis 39: 10 And though she spoke to Joseph day after day, he refused to go to bed with her or even be with her.

Familiar story of Joseph and his run in with Potiphar's wife. My big take away from this story was this...Joseph went out of his way to NOT EVEN BE AROUND her so that he COULDNT and WOULDNT fall into temptation and sin. All of us have things that we struggle with and honestly we need to take a page from Josephs book...we have to put safeguards in place to make sure that it doesnt take us down. I am sure that in order to make sure that he was never even around her, that it would have been a lot of extra work for Joseph, but he was more worried about doing what God wanted and honoring Him and his master that he did EVERYTHING in his control to avoid the situation. Whatever our struggle might be, what safeguards are you...am I...putting in place to make SURE that we dont fall. Until we get to the point of truly doing everything that we can to not put ourselves in that position, we will have a hard time overcoming the temptation.
